Lufthansa Adds Long Haul Flights from Berlin and Dusseldorf

On September 27th, Lufthansa announced that it will commence two new long haul flights to North America from Berlin’s Tegel Airport (TXL) and Dusseldorf (DUS).

map-1

Berlin, Germany (TXL) to New York (JFK):

Starting November 8th, 2017 Lufthansa will add 5x weekly service between Berlin and New York City aboard the airline’s Airbus A330-300 aircraft.

  • Berlin-New York: Takeoff (5:35 PM)-Landing (8:35 PM)
  • New York-Berlin: Takeoff (10:20 PM)-Landing (12:15 PM +1 day)

Dusseldorf, Germany (DUS) to Miami (MIA):

From the same date (November 8th), Lufthansa will connect Dusseldorf to Miami 3x weekly aboard the airline’s A330-300 aircraft.

  • Dusseldorf-Miami: Takeoff (12:05 PM)-Landing (5:50 PM)
  • Miami-Dusseldorf: Takeoff (7:30 PM)-Landing (9:30 AM +1 day)

The Aircraft:

Lufthansa will utilize its A330-300 on both of these routes. The aircraft is outfitted in a 3 class configuration consisting of 48 (fully flat) business class seats arranged in a 2-2-2 layout, 28 premium economy class seats arranged in a 2-3-2 layout, and 185 economy class seats arranged in a 2-4-2 layout. In the premium cabin, Lufthansa’s business class hard product is nothing to write home about if traveling alone, as all passengers are seated next to someone. In addition, passengers along the windows have to step over their seat mate in order to reach the aisle, which can be quite difficult if they have their seat in “bed mode”.

It is important to note that this service will not be around for long. Lufthansa will transfer these two routes over to its low cost subsidiary Eurowings in time for the summer season of 2018. No specific date has yet been given by the airline, but I assume the transfer will be somewhere between late April and early June.

To the Point!

This is a smart decision on Lufthansa’s part. The airline is capitalizing on fellow competitor Air Berlin’s terrible financial situation. The failing airline operates from both DUS and TXL and will cease long haul operations in the coming month, with many believing the airline will fold altogether. It really is a no brainer for LH to pick up right where they left (leave) off.
